After nearly half a century with her husband, Dolly Parton can safely say children aren’t in her future.

The country icon, who celebrates her 48th wedding anniversary to hubby Carl Dean today, tells People Country why kids were never in her cards.

“I often think, it just wasn’t meant for me to have kids so everybody’s kids can be mine,” Dolly says.

Her nieces and nephews call her “Aunt Granny” and their children call her “GeeGee, which is great-granny,” she says.

Dolly has also fine-tuned her maternal instincts working with her non-profit organization, Imagination Library, which provides books to preschoolers.

Dolly says the children call her the “Book Lady.”
